VFD Record Keeping Requirements

VFD rules regarding recordkeeping

Veterinarians will be required to keep the original VFD orders, either in paper or electronic form, for two years. Farmers will also be required to keep copies of each order for two years, and produce them for inspection by the Food and Drug Administration upon request.

The VFD form will include the name and address of the veterinarian and the farmer, the animals being treated, the reason for treatment and the duration of treatment. If animals need to be treated for a period longer than stated on the VFD, a new VFD must be obtained. What is prohibited is the verbal issuance of a VFD.

Farmers should also start a filing system, either paper or electronic, to record and track their VFD.
