Feeding Strategies for Winter Weather

It is that time of the year again when temperatures are beginning to drop. This is when your calves will require a lot more energy. Once the temperature reaches below the lower critical temperature of 32°F for month-old calves, the energy they consume is used for maintenance, making less available for growth and immune function.  So how can you deliver additional nutrients for calves in cold weather?

  • Feed more fat.
  • Feed more milk or milk replacer.
  • Feed more starter or get calves started sooner.
  • Use warm water.
