Dairy herds in Michigan produced 969 million pounds of milk during June — an increase of 21 million pounds or 2.2% more than June 2018.

The overall production growth reflects the increase in the daily rate per cow, up 1.3 pounds from June 2018 at 76.0 pounds, and the state’s expanding dairy herd, up 2,000 head at 425,000 from a year ago.

As a result of that production growth, NASS reported a 12 million pound increase in total milk production in the 24 major states during June, totaling 17.3 billion pounds, up .1 percent from June 2018.

The number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.78 million head, 62,000 head fewer than June 2018, and 12,000 head fewer than May 2019.

Production per cow in the 24 major states averaged 65.9 pounds for June, a slight increase above the 65.4 pounds for June 2018.
